Popps Packing

General information

Brief description of organisation

Popps Packing is an artist-run, neighborhood-based, nonprofit organization founded in 2009 by husband and wife duo Graem Whyte and Faina Lerman. Our mission is to create a robust cultural exchange between local artistic communities, neighbors and an international coterie of visiting residents. Popps Packing straddles the northern Hamtramck / Detroit border. Hamtramck is a dense, 2.1 square mile, culturally diverse city within a city, almost entirely surrounded by Detroit. Our programs include regular exhibitions for local emerging artists, a residency program that draws up to 25 artists a year, skill share workshops, and public events.

Brief description of residency program

Popps Packing offers residencies for emerging and mid-career artists interested in an immersive experience in Hamtramck and Detroit. Residencies are usually for 1-3 months and applications are reviewed every 4-6months. Applications will be considered after the deadline if there are vacancies.

We welcome all disciplines, but find that artists, working in photography, sculpture, architectural interventions and installation are best suited for our residency program. In addition to the communal studios, we offer the various structures and empty lots around the Popps compound as sites for exploration. The opportunity to engage with raw space and join the conversation about emotional, artistic, and economic recovery in a post-industrial landscape is a major draw of the Popps residency program. The abundance of land, raw materials and structures around Popps give artists many opportunities to realize ambitious site specific projects that could not be accomplished in a traditional studio environment.

We currently have 3 programs: Popps Studio Residency, Guest House Residency, and the Momm and Popp Residency for parent artists.

Artists are responsible for residency fees, travel, insurance, and other daily expenses.
Residency fees range from $500-$700/month and include housing, studio, workshop access, a familial environment, bikes and some project and material support.
