Open Spaces Art

General information

Brief description of organisation

The Open Spaces Art organisation was set up to implement a contemporary art vision for the old school building in Feutersoey bei Gstaad, in the Bernese Highlands in Switzerland.

The vision includes artist studios for local artists, and studios and living space for resident artists who come as part of the Open Spaces Art Residency Programme.

The organisation also includes a lounge and dining area open to the public and open for special events every week. Art appreciation, good food, good company.

The organisation puts on a show twice a year, one in February and one in August. A number of minor events are put on to coincide with important events in the local community´s calendar: a Christmas Market, an Autumn Fair and so on.

Brief description of residency program

Open Spaces is an art residency in the Alpine village of Feutersoey, in the Bernese Oberland, which is the Alpine Region of Canton Bern in the heart of Switzerland.

The residency program brings art in an engaged form to the picturesque Saanenland region surrounding Feutersoey and most importantly directly into the community.

Situated in the village centre in a former school building, the residency program has a high local profile and provides a high-visibility cultural centre-point for the village and for the region.

The program invites 2 artists at a time from around the world to work for a period of three months, for a total of 8 artist residencies per year.

Gstaad, an internationally known farming and resort town 10 minutes away by car, is a fully serviced village with galleries. Soon to be built “Les Arts Gstaad” will be the first art museum in the region.

Open Spaces is an invitation to local and visiting artists to produce work and stimulate the sense of community of Feuterseuy and the Saanenland region.

Although there is no charge to artists participating in the residency program, artists are expected to bring their own materials and have sufficient funds for transport to and from Switzerland and food while they are in Switzerland. We are working on obtaining sufficient funding so that we can offer artists a full board and lodging experience, but this will take time.
