Tasarim Bakkali / Tab Residency

General information

Brief description of organisation

Tasarim Bakkali is an open art space located in the center of Yeldegirmeni mahallesi, Kadiköy. The neighborhood which is in the Anatolian side of Istanbul, is home to a lot of artists studios for many years and is transforming to be the new cultural and social center. Being conscious of this transformation, Tasarim Bakkali has been a pioneer in the arts and culture side of this change. While exhibiting the works of Turkish art scenes prominent artists, the opportunity was given to the talented young artists to use the same “open space”.

In three years Tasarim Bakkali presented 29 exhibitions with 44 artists. In the first year of Tab Gallery, the program was regulated so that two artists, paying regard to one being local, would share the same exhibition area and show their work side by side on a monthly basis. Some artists were unfamiliar with each other, thus bringing together different aspects of perception, production, application, practice and material. In the second year Tasarim Bakkali started a series of shows called Architect Exhibitions, inspired from the 1919 “Exhibition for unknown architects” of Arbeitsrat für Kunst Berlin. Seeking for the production on a multidisciplinary basis. In the third year the exhibitions were arranged monthly for solo shows including the international artists who participated in the residency program.
Although it has been three years Tab Gallery became to be one of the alternative and innovative art spaces in Istanbul, which is followed by printed and social media.
With the residency program, our aim is to bring together international artists and the local art scene in Istanbul.
Tasarim Bakkali is an artists run space founded by many people working with multiple disciplines such as visual artists, architects, musicians, software developers, psychologists and so on, sharing the same values of sustainable living and creating. We believe collective thinking and multidisciplinary study is essential for contemporary arts.

Brief description of residency program

With the residency program Tab Gallery aims to be a part of the international art scene, bringing artists to Istanbul for a solo exhibition and sharing their production with the local enthusiasts. Becoming international with the residency program, Tasarim Bakkali aims to be an avant-garde pioneer in Istanbul´s art scene, in a boutique art-space in Yeldegirmeni neighborhood.
For us, art is a collective way of speaking, showing different perspectives, sharing minds and intellect, rather than production of an object of consumption.
We would like to host the artists with similar perspectives, to share the experience of a different kind of production. Promote the artists to be more experimental and avant-garde.
Tasarim Bakkali is an open art space without discrimination or classification of people. We have always worked with our artist side by side, taking into consideration their needs and requests. We see the artists who exhibit in the space like one of the members of Tab Design Team. With the artist residency program Tab Gallery opens its doors to different audience groups, thus widening the perception of the audience as well as the artist.

Providing the exhibition and performance area in Kad?köy, Tab Residency hosts the artists with accommodation and studio space in the Princes´ Islands. The Princes\' Islands are an archipelago off the Anatolian coast of Istanbul, mostly car free, naturally and historically preserved area. Buyukada is the biggest island of the cluster, which you can find ferries connecting the island to both the Asian and European side of Istanbul from 6AM till 12PM.
Ten minutes walk from Buyukada port, the residency building is a four floored shared building, one floor for the studio spaces, one floor for accommodation rooms, one floor for common spaces such as kitchen and living room and a garden.
The residency studios doesn\'t contain any specific workshops so they can be used for any kind of work. The studios will be reorganized considering the needs of each artist. Disciplines involved can be architecture, industrial design, fashion, interior design, conceptual art, literary arts, visual arts, new media, performing arts (the artist should consider the small exhibition space), multi disciplinary works, any kind of recycle, upcycle or reuse projects.
Tasarim Bakkali, is an open art space run by artists. No curatorial selection will be done by Tab Design Team. The program of the gallery and diversity of exhibitions will be considered. Also as a showcase Tab Gallery has never highlighted a style or ism so every artist will be considered in the same transparency.

What is expected of the artist:
The artist should prepare an exhibition in Istanbul for the particular gallery space.
Donation of an artwork is not mandatory but will be appreciated.
The artist should straighten out the needs and style of production beforehand.
The artist should be experienced enough to design and prepare an exhibition in a limited time. (1-3 months)
The artist should provide information about old works and exhibitions.
A residency fee of 700 euros monthly should be paid before the beginning of the residency.

What are the benefits of the program:
The residency in Buyukada offers the artists a quiet and peaceful living and working opportunity, very close to the charming chaos Istanbul.
