Brief description of organisation

Kaaysá Art Residency is a family property owned for the last 20 years that was turned into an art residency. The organizers are a gallerist, in the art for more than 30 years, and a young curator, poet, and writer that has been organizing art residencies around Brazil.

The property has 37 rooms, from which some will be dedicated to be a regular individual or double accommodation equipped with a bed or two, a table, a bathroom, mini fridge, and a ceiling fan, and others will be used as a private studio, where the artist can work and sleep, of course depending on the kind of work and materials he will be using.

Besides the rooms, we have a big collective studio and a lot of open air areas where artists can produce big works. We already have woodworking machinery and an audio recording studio and we are now preparing a photographic laboratory and a ceramic oven . Collective kitchens are available to residents, as well as bicycles and parking.

The property has 5,000 square meters of green area and is located in the heart of the Atlantic Rain Forest, among the most beautiful beaches of the North Coast of the state of Sao Paulo, near waterfalls and protected areas, inhabited by native indigenous and a community that lives on fishing and tourism.

The proximity of São Paulo, which is about 160 km away, guarantees residents easy access to the purchase of special materials or to visit more than 120 museums, 160 theaters, 300 cinemas, 40 cultural centers, numerous libraries and art galleries.

We are located at Estrada do Cascalho, 1270 - Boiçucanga, São Sebastião, SP

Brief description of residency program

Kaaysá is an art residency located in the heart of the Atlantic Rain Forest by the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil, 160 km away from Sao Paulo, the largest city in South America.

With individual and collective programs, the space allows experiencing the forest and the sea, lectures with biologists and anthropologists on the Atlantic Rain Forest, exchanges with artists and curators from Brazil and abroad, socializing with local residents and monitoring projects by mediators.

Kaaysá welcomes creative professionals such as visual artists, photographers, curators, architects, musicians, designers, researchers, philosophers, writers, scientists, dancers, filmmakers and other actors or cultural agents.

The proposal is to interweave processes of different natures with dialogic, thematic, biographical or gestural synergies. We believe that immersion in nature can sharpen the senses, and the creative process on the move can lead residents to inhabit new places as well in their productions. Concepts such as participation, exchange, and collective life are key pieces of experience that suggest a collaboration with the local artistic scene and the formation of the public, thinking art also as a mean of circulating information and instrument of transformation.
