Brief description of residency program

Viljandi Residency Program is coordinated by the Viljandi Centre for Creative Industries (SA Viljandimaa Loomemajanduskeskus)

Our program is open for
artists-handicraftsmen (textile and metal artists), visual artists (painters, illustrators, cross-disciplinary artists, art curators and art historians, video artists
and folk musicians, traditional music ensembles and folk music teachers.

We invite people who have made their passion their profession.
We welcome artists to spend a one month or three months long residency in Viljandi, a small town in Southern Estonia ( - a town which takes pride in its unusually vibrant cultural life.

Viljandi Residency awaits professionals in their fields, a special interest in Estonian culture can be an advantage, but is not required. Founding bodies, the three centers, are professional institutions which are fully integrated into Estonian and Viljandi´s artistic scene and run by professionals, many of them with academic background. All centers are professionally equipped (fully equipped textile and metal-working studios, video studio at the Centre for Creative Industries; fully equipped concert and rehearsal halls at the Folk Music Centre; art studio at the Kondas Centre).

We offer good working conditions and accommodation, we expect the residents to present their work to the audience: residents can perform live, give concerts/lectures/workshops, have exhibitions etc.

Special features:
- close cooperation with Viljandi Culture Academy (University of Tartu);

- excellent expertise of (Estonian) traditional art, handicraft and music;

- unique small town environment which offers the residents both professional working place and idyllic social life - community is going strong and the residents are welcome to take part in our old and new events (e.g. Town Art Festival August 17-September 17, 2017, see: and enrich our life with their experience and work.

We await our first residents on November 20, 2017 (application period October 1 - November 12). The choice will be made by a committee. Residency period: November 20, 2017 - April 30, 2018.
