Brief description of residency program

Seven Gardens is the name of a newly-built, privately-owned villa in Kerman, Iran. It is in a picturesque mountainous area that is close to the city at the same time as being in a stunning, natural setting. It is also very close to Mahan, a small town popular with tourists.
Seven Gardens Residency is named for the new highway and tourism area that it is in. This location will allow for many possible group excursions and things for residents to do in their spare time while attending the residency. This highway features large-scale public sculptures dotted along it, which makes even the drive to the residency an artistic experience.
The villa features three private bedrooms, a large gated yard with a small pool and fruit trees, and a big terrace for outdoor art-making. It is a short drive to both the airport and the city.

The program fee includes accommodations, airport pickup/drop-off, activities and excursions, a shared studio and all food, allowing residents to relax and make work. There is one private bedroom and two semi-private rooms. Trips to the the city, the grand bazaar, museums, mosques and more will inspire residents. One longer excursion is included in each cycle of the program, to places like Shahdad Desert or
Meymand. Persian cooking and craft workshops and demos will help residents build skills that will help them continue to explore Iranian culture after our time together.

Iranian handicraft is the main focus of the program. Historically, white male artists have been the focus of gallery collections and art history books, with women who craft being seen as some of the least respected artists. Most people in Iran, especially women, face extra boundaries keeping them from participating in the international art world. I want to introduce residents to Iranian contemporary artists and artisans, making connections that will hopefully last past the duration of the residency.

Artists using non-toxic and somewhat portable materials would be best, including photographers, writers, or artists working with acrylics, watercolour or drawing. There is no expectation for artists to exhibit or donate works in this residency.

Residents must be willing to follow the laws of Iran, including the rules of dress for men and women, and the laws against drinking and drugs. Residents are also responsible for obtaining a tourist visa before they enter the country.
