Brief description of residency program

Seven Gardens is the name of a newly-built, privately-owned villa in Kerman, Iran. It is in a picturesque mountainous area that is close to the city at the same time as being in a stunning, natural setting.
Seven Gardens Residency is named for the new highway and tourism area that it is in. This location will allow for many possible group excursions and things for residents to do in their spare time while attending the residency. This highway features large-scale public sculptures dotted along it, which makes even the drive to the residency an artistic experience.
The villa features three private bedrooms, a large gated yard with a small pool and fruit trees, and a big terrace for outdoor art-making. It is a short drive to both the airport and the city.

The program fee with include accommodations, airport pickup/drop-off, a shared studio and all food, allowing residents to relax and make work. There is one private bedroom and two semi-private rooms. Trips to the the city, the grand bazaar, galleries, mosques and more will inspire residents. One longer excursion is likely to be included in each cycle of the program, to places like Kalout or Arg e Bam. For the first season of the residency, starting May 2018, cycles will be one week long and very affordable. In spring 2019, cycles will be at least two weeks long, and comparable to the average cost of similar residencies.

Diversity is the main focus of the program. Historically, white male artists have been the focus of gallery collections and art history books. People in Iran, especially women, face extra boundaries keeping them from participating in the art world. I want to introduce residents to Iranian contemporary artists, making connections between these artists and the residents that will hopefully last past the duration of the residency.

I am looking for emerging and mid-career artists who are interested in Iranian culture and diversity in the arts, and who would like to attend a shorter residency where they would gather inspiration, meet interesting people, and do research and make quick artworks that would inspire later, more finished works. This residency isn\'t for people who want to make labour intensive works, like large sculpture, or who want lots of solo time to focus on making a full body of work. Artists using non-toxic and somewhat portable materials would be best, including photographers, writers, or artists working with acrylics, watercolour or drawing. There is no expectation for artists to exhibit or donate works in this residency.

Residents must be willing to follow the laws of Iran, including the rules of dress for men and women, and the laws against drinking and drugs. Residents are also responsible for obtaining a tourist visa before they enter the country.
