Elmo´s House Artist Residency

General information

Brief description of organisation

Created as a way of establishing a connection between the founder’s adopted home in Canada and her cultural roots in the Philippines, Elmo’s House Artist Residency has since developed to include Artists from all over the world.

Operating in an ancestral home, the Residency was originally built in the 1960’s and renovated decades later. The house is a looming architecture of cement and stone and the town’s tallest structure. Artists in Residence have unobstructed views of Batan and plenty of room to think and make.

Elmo’s House Artist Residency accepts applications from artists and creatives from various disciplines year round through an open call. Special consideration will be given to individuals that can establish a meaningful connection with the surrounding landscape and culture through their proposed project. Though the residency is self-directed, there is plenty of opportunity for collaboration, guidance and assistance in developing work.

Artists in Residence stay a minimum of one month up to two months, during the months of April, May, September and October. Applications requesting a timeframe outside of the operating months will be considered but not guaranteed.

Brief description of residency program

Elmo’s House Artist Residency is a studio/live space for local and international artists. Located at the heart of a small seaside town of Batan in the province of Aklan in the Philippines, our residency provides a unique immersive experience for Artists. The town is off the tourist route and has retained its particular charm over the years. Religious traditions and festivals happen throughout the year and are all highly anticipated events. The Residency is also near secluded beaches and forgotten historical sites. The uninvestigated complexity of Batan is captivating.

Elmo’s House Artist Residency’s call to action is threefold:
1. To build an international art community in Batan, Aklan while fostering cultural exchange through initiatives and projects.
2. To facilitate new perspectives for research and a space to create work in an alternative setting.
3. To act as conduit between Batan and participating artists while initiating conversation about contemporary art and critical thinking.

Elmo’s House Artist Residency’s public art projects and community based activities are encouraged and supported by the Municipality of Batan. A small exhibition space within the Residency was built in collaboration with the local government and is another example of the efforts to engage with Batan, as well as encourage play and experimentation from our artists.
