Iasi Art Residency

General information

Brief description of organisation

Known as The Cultural Capital of Romania, Iasi is a symbol in Romanian history, it is the second-largest city in Romania, after the national capital Bucuresti, and the seat of Iasi County. Located in the historical region of Moldavia, Iasi has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Romanian social, cultural, academic and artistic life.
Iasi is one of the most important education and research centres of the country and its social and cultural life revolves around: "Palace of Culture", "Vasile Alecsandri" National Theater, "Moldova State Philharmonic", "Opera House", "Iasi Athenaeum", "Botanical Garden" , "Central University Library", the high quality cultural centres and festivals, an array of museums, memorial houses, religious and historical monuments.

The main aim of "Iasi Art Residency" is to create various and complex events in Iasi, a cultural town with a lots of inspiration sources, to meet the students from "George Enescu" National University of Arts and the local artists, in order to exchange ideas and to share experiences with them as for a future possible collaboration.

The artists-in-residence will have the opportunity to exhibit in "Aparte" Gallery which belongs to the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, where our students are often organising here various exhibitions, promoting their artworks and their concepts. The artists-in-residence might also exhibit in another gallery from town. It is very important for them to take into account that the exhibition spaces are generally booked one year before and the artists in residence must understand that they will exhibit in accordance to the availability of an exhibition space from Iasi. That´s why organising an exhibition is not mandatory.

The artists-in-residence will have totally freedom to take their time in order to create their art project, there is no daily schedule. The organiser of the residency together with the students volunteers will take care of their needs, will guide them in town and will accompany them to some important cultural events from the town, but only when they have free time. That´s why, an important aspect is that the artists-in-residence must understand that sometimes they have to manage on their own.

The organisers will find a private accommodation room for the artists.

The artists-in-residence will work in the studios from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, together with the other students. The studio is for free.

They can also make an online research by using the computers and the art books of the faculty library.

The teachers from Painting Department might cover only a part of the art materials for the artists-in-residence. If necessary, the artists will buy other art materials from the art supplies from Iasi.

The artists will be waited at the airport by the organiser of this residency, they will be hosted and afterwards they will be presented the studios of the university, the teachers and the students. The organiser together with some students volunteers will also present them the most important sightseeings of Iasi town.

They must pay for: their round trip flight ticket, for the taxi from and to the airport, for accommodation, for a part of their art materials and for food.

They can eat either at "Saint Nicholas" Cafeteria which belongs to "Metropolitan Cathedral" or at "Titu Maiorescu" Cafeteria which belongs to "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University. They are both located in the central area.

A very important thing is that the artists-in-residence must have health insurance!
