Athena Standards Residency

General information

Brief description of organisation

Athena Standards Residency was born of the idea that the city of Athens offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience simultaneously the vibrant urban culture of a contemporary city and the rich history of an ancient cosmopolitan center. With the intention of creating a network of international and local artists, the residency program aims to encourage a dialogue with the local art scene.

´documenta 14´ put the city of Athens on the map of the contemporary art scene, and as a result there has been an influx of art practitioners to Athens. The city continues to be an artistic hub, welcoming people from all over the world, who have found new ground to express their ideas.

Athens Standards Residency was initiated in response to the need for dedicated space and community, in order to carry forth in the vein of cultural production and exchange. With the intention of creating a network of international and local artists, the residency program aims to encourage a dialogue with the local art scene.

Brief description of residency program

The Athena Standards Residency program provides artists of all disciplines a semi-private studio space in a repurposed commercial building, professional development opportunities, and lodging for a month or more in the city of Athens.

The residency session lasts a minimum of one month, however, we encourage residents to consider staying for two months or longer, in order to develop a deeper knowledge of the city. The residency fee is €1500/month. The residency fee is reduced by 10% for two or three consecutive months, and by 20% for four or more consecutive months. We open all sessions within the year to applications, and reviews of applicants are conducted on a monthly basis. We are able to accommodate 12 artists at a time. ASR is closed the month of August.

The application process is free and open to all. Please apply through our website: We invite emerging and established artists with a dedicated studio practice to apply. Our facilities include workspace with abundant natural light, storage for 2D works in progress, a wood shop, a kitchenette and lounge, WIFI, keypad access and a security guard in the evenings, as well as a studio manager to provide assistance five days per week. Through collaboration with nearby facilities, we can assist artists in finding access to large format digital printing, darkroom photo developing, printmaking presses and kiln firing.

Shared housing is arranged for the residency artists in apartments around Athens, in proximity to the studio premises, and artists are provided with a monthly metro card.

It is our mission to allow for the exchange of ideas and to provide for the opportunity to form lasting professional relationships with international colleagues. Athena Standards is proud to be able to offer four studio spaces at reduced or no cost to emerging and established Athenian artists, in order to facilitate cultural exchange. Athena Standards’ in-house art historian and curator, Elizabeth Plessa, will be visiting the studios of the resident artists regularly to discuss the progress of their work.

During the residency, Elizabeth Plessa and the ASR staff will be sharing opportunities with artists to visit gallery openings, lectures, screenings, and other cultural events around Athens. Additionally, there will be workshops offered, including a Handbuilding Ceramics Course under the professorship of Giorgos Tserionis and a guided tour of six major archaeology sites in Athens by Victor Rusu.
