Brief description of organisation

The mission of the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts is to support established and emerging writers, visual artists, interdisciplinary artists, and musicians/composers by providing working and living environments that allow uninterrupted time for work, reflection and creative growth and to present and support arts-related programming that expands public awareness and appreciation of the arts.

Since 2001, KHN has hosted more than 50 working artists each year. Each has found privacy in which to create along with ample opportunities to interact with fellow artists in a vibrant and friendly town of Nebraska City.

Brief description of residency program

Established in 2001, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts (KHN) is a renowned Artist Residency program that supports established and emerging visual artists, writers, musicians/composers, and interdisciplinary artists from around the world. Uniquely housed in a residential prairie-style complex in Nebraska City, Nebraska, KHN awards up to seventy residency awards per year and hosts 5 resident artists at any time. Residency awards are 2-8 weeks in length and include a weekly $100 stipend.

How to reach

By train

Bus and train depots are located in Lincoln and Omaha. Greyhound, Megabus, and Amtrak are good options to look into for travel to Nebraska from many parts of the country.

At this time there is no regular public transportation between Lincoln or Omaha and Nebraska City. There are car rental services at the airports, but there are no car-return options in Nebraska City. If you rent a car you will need to keep it throughout the duration of your residency.

The Kimmel Foundation currently provides for taxi fare from Omaha or Lincoln to KHN at the time of your arrival and departure.

By plane

If you choose to fly to your KHN residency, there are two airports an hour away: Omaha Eppley Airfield (OMA) and the Lincoln Airport (LNK). The Omaha airport is larger and generally provides more flight options and at lower fares than travel into Lincoln.

At this time there is no regular public transportation between Lincoln or Omaha and Nebraska City. There are car rental services at the airports, but there are no car-return options in Nebraska City. If you rent a car you will need to keep it throughout the duration of your residency.

The Kimmel Foundation currently provides for taxi fare from Omaha or Lincoln to KHN at the time of your arrival and departure.

The Kansas City Airport (KCI) is two hours away. Taxi service will not be paid for from Kansas City to Nebraska City.

By car

Nebraska City is located in Southeast Nebraska along the Missouri River and is easily accessible from Highway 75, Highway 2, or Interstate 29. Check Google Maps or other Internet mapping services, or give us a call for recommended routes. KHN has a private, on-site parking on the east side of the building for resident vehicles.
