National Parks Arts Foundation Fort Union National Monument Artist-in Residence Program, Watrous, NM, USA

Wild West Ruins & High Country Vistas!

The National Parks Arts Foundation in association with The National Park Service inaugurates a new Fall residency in New Mexico. The sheer majesty of Fort Union is epic! This is an ideal location for artists of all stripes. At Fort Union, you have an orchestra seat at the marvelous changing light of the high plains and nearby Hermit’s Peak. Explore and get inspired by the molten geometric forms of the adobe pillars and earthworks of the one most important military installations in the pioneer-era southwest. Get inspired: watch the autumn storms blow in for hours across the plains, fool with the trickster coyotes and pronghorn antelope, or explore the wagon rut scars of the Santa Fe Trail, or the nearby ghost town of Loma Parda. Let the ghost bugles blow!

This one-month residency offers:

  • On-Site residence in a secluded area of beautiful Northern New Mexico in Fort Union National Monument.
  • A venue for a workshop or public lecture about the artwork or process.
  • A chance to donate Artwork, through NPAF, to the National Parks Collection and to become a part of America’s National Heritage.
  • No residency fee.

For forty years, Fort Union National Monument, located in Mora County, New Mexico, was the hub of commerce, national defense, and migration at the final stretch of the Santa Fe Trail. The richly evocative ruins of three intermingled old forts, the fort was finally abandoned in 1891, and became a National Monument in 1954 under the Eisenhower administration. The sprawling 700-plus acre monument is nestled on one side by the Turkey Mountains and backed by foothills of the Sangre de Cristo range. The Monument is located an hour and a half from Santa Fe, and two hours from Taos.

The National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF) is the only world-wide non-profit providing Artist-in-Residence Programs (AiR), Workshops and Museum Loans uniquely in cooperation with National Parks, National Monuments, State Parks, World Heritage Sites and other park locations. NPAF partners with the National Park Service, State Parks, park partners, schools, under-served organizations, museums, galleries and other entities in promotion of our successful programs. Often the artist in residence may be offered even more….. a stipend, a studio, donation of an automobile all meals from the parks concessionaire, individual grants and scholarships, sizable discounts, a chance to exhibit work and accompany park scientists and rangers along with a place to live, studio, public program venue of workshop, lecture or concert space, interaction with NPS interpretation and other NPS staff. All where applicable.

PLEASE NOTE: These may be available, but the artist should refer to the particular park NPAF AIR program and application to see if these specifics are available. Often we will not have confirmation of donations and other funding or other opportunities in the park until the residency commencement date. Please see the NPAF website for any changes in offers for artist per particular program.
