Fall and winter residency in Barcelona. Dealing with the city.

Dealing with the city. Fall 2016 and winter 2017. Residency in Barcelona.

Description of residency program
Jiwar Creation and Society is an artist residency based in Barcelona, in the heart of the Gràcia district. Its basic philosophy concentrates on two pillars: the right to intercultural mobility and urban space and its various aspects. Jiwar, meaning neighbourhood in Arabic, promotes the idea of interculturalism through a set of artistic events that enhance the creative dialogue of artists in residence, local artists and the local community. This takes place during our monthly open studios, whereby we open our doors to our neighbours and community and put them in contact with the creative journey of our artists in residence, and also thanks to our support and coordination, giving the best contacts to every artist.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Applications are open to all artists (visual arts, crafts, design, sculpture, installation, writers, filmmakers) and social scientists/researchers seeking an opportunity to realize and present a project in a culturally challenging urban environment. Artists, writers and researchers with a keen interest in urban space as well as participatory projects are to be given priority in the assessment procedure. Jiwar supports all artists in their research in any possible way.
Jiwar provides a huge space to work in the private studios and the shared spaces as the library, the veranda and the garden. Every studio is furnished with a table to work and the Suite Antoni Tàpies has a private workshop. Jiwar gives support to artists helping them with connexions, support to research and cultural and artistic Barcelona agenda. We don’t provide machinery or materials.

Accommodation - Studio/workspace
Jiwar has 4 studios: Gentil, an small room with a single bed and a table. Artigas and Rodoreda; two huge studios with a separate space to rest and work with a desk. Suite Antoni Tàpies, with a private bathroom and workshop for visual artists. The common spaces are shared with the other residents and can be used.

Fees and support
Jiwar is not available to give grants for the individual residencies. However, we give all our support writing letters of recommendation and all requested for artists to have their own grants.
The fees are cheaper from one month of stay. If the artists stays less than a month the fee by day increase. By month, the fees are 850€, 1.150€ and 1.250€ depending the size of the studio. That includes our support and coordination, the stay but NO the meals neither the materials.
The artists from emerging countries and the Spanish artists will have a discount of 10%.

Expectations towards the artist
In our individual residence program Jiwar doesn’t apply any control to the residents’ work. We watch over a good atmosphere to work and a good comradeship between residents. Once a month Jiwar organises an open studio to share our residents creative journey, giving the opportunity to meet the public and talk with the artist. We are interested in the process more than in the final work. Is not obligatory participate in the open studio even if it has been a grateful experience for all.
