Self-directed Residencies

This residency is perfect for those who seek more solitude in their days-- time and space to create.

Description of residency program
Our self-directed residencies usher a more independent time. This residency is perfect for those who seek more solitude in their days-- the time, space and clarity to create-- but who also want a supportive and creative group for inspiration and informal critique. These residencies encourage a blend of writers, scholars, poets, musicians, actors, directors, artists and other creatives to come together for individual discovery and communal exchanges. At this time, residency participants are carefully selected based on the quality of artists' work, the impact this residency will have and potential synergies with other residents. We strive to cultivate creative exploration by providing inspiring settings for artists, writers, curators, researchers and filmmakers to encourage intercultural, interdisciplinary and intergenerational dialogues.

The residency is flexible but we suggest a minimum of three weeks. Laberinto Institute provides opportunities for established and emerging artists alike. We run each program with 6-8 residents. The residency fee includes shared housing at its unique site overlooking Lake Coatepeque, and daily lunches. We welcome collaborative applicants-- if you are applying as a group you may submit one application. A working knowledge of English or Spanish is helpful.

Take this time to work on, launch or finish an inspiring project, dream, connect with others, seek and find editorial or structural advice, and enjoy periods of solitude and sharing.

We believe that through this historic site and its mission we can foster deep knowledge and appreciation for the cultural heritage of the region. Interactions with the cultural and environmental contexts of the location are encouraged. There will be opportunities for excursions, cultural visits and exchanges with working artists in El Salvador.

Our umbrella organization, laberinto projects manages multiple projects and initiatives to support its' mission to foster contemporary art practices, social inclusion and dialogue in El Salvador and its diaspora through exhibitions, art education, artist residencies and community engagement initiatives.

Please see FAQ page for further questions.

The space
Please read more about the rich cultural history of Laberinto Institute HERE.

Because the house is a shared living space, residents are asked to be sensitive to others’ needs and to the site as a whole. Some basic tools and materials may be available, but in general, artists should plan to bring anything they need or make arrangements to acquire materials while they are here (let us know if you need help facilitating this). We can support work that takes place outdoors, in shared space, in domestic space, and by creative producers who can bring their own equipment and materials.
