Deadline: Open call

Independent Artist

Self-funded artist residency provides room, board, and studio at the rate of $35 to $75 per day.

Description of residency program
Independent Artist Residencies at SAW provide an opportunity for artists to immerse themselves in new projects and ideas in a creative environment, free from everyday pressures and concerns. Artists entering through this program typically have a clear and focused plan in mind, and are often in the final stages of a project in need of completion. An artist may, for example, reserve the glass shop in order to complete a sculpture, or make arrangements with the foundry to cast a piece they have already designed and developed prior to arrival at SAW.

Duration of residency
Artists may propose a stay of any duration. Applicants will be asked to specify both a preferred and alternate timeframe for their residency in the application materials they submit, as well as an explanation of how they intend to make use of their time at SAW.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Visual artists working in any medium, as well as writers, choreographers, musicians and performers, are invited to apply. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as far in advance as possible.

Accommodation and Studio/ workspace
Access to *SAW’s facilities include a welding bay, blacksmith shop, silk screen studio, wood shop, CNC machine, and open pole barns. Additional fees are required for participation in the foundry, ceramic studio and anagama kiln firings, and glass shop.

Fees and support
The base rate for an Independent Artist is $25 per day for access to *SAW facilities and $35/$50 per day for tent/room and meals.

As with other SAW residencies, supplies and consumables, private tutoring in any studio modality, participation in workshops, and travel to/from SAW for the residency are at the expense of the artist. A complete listing of material fees and studio charges is available upon request.

Expectations towards the artist
In keeping with Salem Art Works’ mission to create a collaborative and open space for art making, each independent artist is encouraged to contribute to the communal life at SAW in one or more ways. Artists are invited to help with the preparation of evening meals, and asked to participate in studio visits, critiques and works-in-progress showings during their stay.
