Deadline: Open call

RUD AIR Open Call

Retreat for independent artists and writers in rural countryside of Sweden.

RUD AIR is first of all a retreat for artists. It is not a space for promotion, exhibition, strategic networking, or facing a public audience. It is a space for reflection and rest in order to make space for something new.

RUD AIR wants to make space for the stillness and peace within the surrounding nature and within human consciousness. As a contrast to the excessive visual noice, imagery crap and egoistic self-affirmation, in this world of crisis and chaos - artists are welcomed to a possibility of being quiet and listen to the silence. RUD AIR wishes to give artists the opportunity to not produce or perform, but to gently direct their attention to the source from where ideas and creativity truly originates, before it is even called art. The boundless space within oneself that constantly redefines itself in relation to the world.

However, RUD AIR is a self-directed program and it is up to the artists themselves to use this possibility the way they want. RUD AIR believes in the freedom of art and intuition and don´t want to exclude or restrict impulses of creativity. At the same time the ethics of the spectator, the fellow human being, and the awareness of the specific surrounding and local community must always be treated with consideration and respect. If the residents would like to have an open studio or other event, and invite local artists and others, it can be arranged on a case-by-case basis.

RUD AIR´s main focus is on the visual arts; painting, drawing, photography, video, installation and performance. It encourages as well interdisciplinary and cross-boundary practices. Writing and research also fits well in this setting. RUD AIR emphasize on the unsure, unsecure, undefined and unexpected states of the creativity process.

The house, formerly a missionary house, was built in 1891. It is situated on an elevated plateau in a valley overlooking open sky and hilly countryside with meadows, arable land, forests and some neighbouring houses. The wildlife of Dalsland, with its thousands of lakes, is just around the corner.

The house has a large, spacious hall with an area of 115 square meters. Measuring five meters from floor to ceiling, the hall has seven large windows which provide an impressive ambient light. There is in addition a little stage. The hall is available for artists from all creative fields. However the main focus is on the visual arts, writing and research. The studio is shared between the host and one to three residence artists at the time, with flexibility towards collaborative groups.

The working facilities are low-tech and simple. Artists bring and manage their own materials. RUD AIR has no production equipment available. Only free-standing walls to work against, desks, chairs, bookshelves, a video camera, a video beamer, a slide projector and a small collection of basic tools. Other facilities include: Internet, washing machine, bicycles, camping equipment and a canoe.

The residency is mainly for one to three individuals at a time. There is flexibility for collaborative groups or partners who might want to share a room.

On the first floor there are two rooms with a shared kitchen and a private entrance. There is also a bathroom with a shower available on the ground floor. The kitchen is fully equipped, and includes a fireplace for the colder seasons. The rooms are light and supplied with basic furnishings. Extra beds are available if required.

The artist is responsible for cleaning the private room, kitchen, bathroom and workspace at the end of each residency period.

Please respect that parts of the house are the hosts´ private space. The host is not always present in the house.

Please use headphones if you want to listen to music in the studio, if there isn´t anything else agreed upon.
