Loire Valley Residency Open Call for 1 to 6 month stays

Loire Valley UNESCO World Heritage location in an old port town on the banks of the Loire River.

Description of residency program
L'ancienne Boucherie is a converted 16th century bulding located in the picturesque river port town of Bréhémont on the banks of the Loire River in the renowned castle country of central France. Formerly the village butcher shop with living quarters above, the bulding was abandoned when the last butcher left in 2012. Renovation began on the building in 2014 and it is now near completion, with the new layout consisting of three separate self-catering fully  furnished apartments on three levels and a large worshop/exhibtion space on the ground floor in the former shop, which has large glass shop windows overlooking the Loire River.

The exhibition space is accessible from the street and exhibitions and/or demonstrations can be easily organized in the space itself, either on a modest scale or in conjunction with the municipality, allowing for much more exhibition space in communal buildings if need be.

Situated within a few minutes cycling distance of many of the area's most famous castles and wineries, the property is ideally located for exploring the region known as the 'Garden of France'. The calm, quiet riverside setting is conducive to reflection, creative work, and artistic inspiration of all sorts.

Duration of residency
The duration can go from one month up to a full 6 months, from October 1st until April 30th each year.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
All artistic disciplines are welcome; however, the studio space is only equipped with hot and cold running water, several easels and work tables, chairs, and such. No other materials are provided; yet if any specific type of equipment is needed by an artist, please let us know and we will see what we can do.

Accommodation
The living quarters are in the same building as the work space. There is a 1 bedroom 40 square meter flat on the ground floor that could house 2 people. There is a 2 bedroom flat on the 1st floor that could house up to 5 people. This apartment takes up the entire floor for a surface area of 85 square meters. On the second floor, there is a 35 square meter studio apartment with a magnificent view over the Loire River.

All of these apartments have fully equipped kitchens and the sheets and towels are included in the rental price. There is a washing machine and dryer available in the building.

Studio/ workspace
The workspace on the ground floor is approximately 35 square meters of open space. There are two very large glass windows which used to be the butcher shop display windows. The windows are facing north towards the Loire River. There is a sink with hot and cold running water. There are work tables, easels, chairs and a few other pieces of furniture for comfort.

Fees and support
Your residency host can assist artists with purchasing materials and such. This assistant is limited to logistics, however. If the artist does not have any means of transportation, then the host coordinates buying trips for materials and groceries as needed. As a particpant in the host's artist residency program, the Art Supply store will give you a professional discount.

Expectations towards the artist
There are no obligatory talks, exhibitions, or workshops; however, depending on the individual artist, any one of these activities can be arranged in conjunction with the mayor's office in certain cases.
