Now Accepting 2018 Applications for Visual Artists | Vancouver Island

Self-directed residencies in an old boatbuilding workshop on the West Coast of Canada.

The Ou Gallery is an artist-run centre with a contemporary art gallery & a large workshop space for artist studios, events, workshops & performances.

Our residency is process based and we welcome applications from visual & performance artists who would like a relaxed place to focus on building their portfolio & exploring new themes.

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN FOR OUR 2018 YEAR - to see who else is coming, please visit our AiR Profiles here: https://www.theougallery.com/air-artist-profiles/

About The Ou
Our search to experience & create art has taken us across the world, through basement shows and into attics, until we found & created the Ou Gallery. We hope to continue our journey with you by building an inclusive community space where international artists are able to share their art & perspectives in a creative & supportive environment.

The Ou Gallery & residency used to be an old boatbuilding workshop and you can feel the history in the old fir floors and layers of resin. We aim to be 'more than just wall space' and our monthly exhibitions are curated to reflect a contemporary & emerging art space unique to the Valley.

Our residency is open year round & the studio space provided is in an historic boatbuilding workshop from the 1920’s with 24-hour access.

Duration of residency
Minimum stay of 1 week available, maximum stay of 3 months.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Though completely optional, we would support you in creating & leading a workshop for the community, and presenting an exhibition (as space permits) of your work during the residency or in conclusion of your stay.

Accommodation
A furnished, private bedroom with desk. Linens for bed & bath, shampoo & conditioner. Package of 'welcome home' goods, heat & hot water, wi-fi, dishwasher, heated bathroom floor, shared laundry, garden and patio area.

Studio/ workspace
24hours access to a large workspace with tables, wall space, natural light & access to nature.
You are able to setup your own semi-private, dedicated space to suit your needs.

Fees and support
$950 for the month, $650 for 2 weeks, $325 weekly

Airport pickup from YCD only or Horseshoe Bay Ferry

Expectations towards the artist
This is a self directed, process based residency so the artist is responsible for creating own materials, developing the content & descriptions for any workshops, and for the presentation of an exhibition (time & space pending). We will support the artist with marketing and meet weekly for check-in & mentorship.

Artist is responsible for their own travel to Vancouver Island, and their own meals.
