Edition/Basel 2018 Printmaking Session 2

12 days of printmaking in relief, intaglio & stone lithography in Basel, Switzerland.

Description of the program:
Artists working in intaglio, relief, lithography and letterpress techniques will be selected to participate in 2 sessions at the Druckwerk Printmaking Studio in central Basel, Switzerland. Each session is a 12-day program consisting of 10 artists.
The program is intended to be an opportunity for artists working in the field of printmaking to come together to share ideas, techniques, and cultural insights, all while immersing themselves in the process of creation. There is of course the chance to learn new techniques from the other artists, but there is no teaching element of the program. Participants are expected to have hands-on experience with printmaking.

Duration:
Session 1 runs from July 18 to July 29, 2018, concluding with an exhibition at the Basler Papiermühle Museum. Session 2 runs from August 1 to August 12, 2018, concluding with an exhibition at the Kaskadenkondensator Basel Gallery. Exhibition project themes are chosen collaboratively, and interpreted individually or collectively by participants during their time in the workshop.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance available:
Printmakers working in intaglio, relief, lithography and letterpress techniques will have access to two etching presses, two letterpress machines, two litho presses and a large selection of stones, and an offset press in the druckwerk printmaking studio. More info and photographs of the machines can be found here:
http://druckwerk.ch/en/werkstatt

Only limited assistance is available in the studio.

Accommodation:
Limited accommodation is available on-site. There are both shared and single options, ranging in price from 400 - 700 CHF for two weeks. All rooms have access to a kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities. There are also a number of apartments for rent in the nearby area, which the organizers can help to secure. In the past, participants coming with family members have opted to rent their own apartment in the city of Basel, which is a friendly, safe, and accessible city.

Studio/ workspace:
The program takes place at the druckwerk print studio, located in the Werkraum Warteck PP, a former brewery, in Basel, Switzerland. See link below. The space is a large, open room on the second floor of the building, accessible by elevator. There are many work tables spread around the studio. The building is in KleinBasel, and is within two blocks of a grocery store, restaurants, and bakeries. It is also two blocks from public transportation, and the Rhein river. Basel in the summer is a busy, active town, and the river can be swum in.

Fees and support:
Program fee is 400 CHF.
Basic materials (ink, tarlatan, rags, etc) are included in the fee. A good selection of paper, linoleum, and other materials is available for purchase directly from the print shop.
One fully subsidized spot is available in each session for an artist whose participation requires assistance due to financial hardship. In the past, we have hosted artists from Burkina Faso and Cuba. Please enquire directly with the organizers.

Expectations towards the artist:
Artists participate in a discussion to find the session's theme, and the title of the exhibition. They are then able to work individually and/or collaboratively toward the exhibition, which occurs on the 10th day of the program, and have 24-hour access to the workshop.
The artists meet halfway through the project, in the exhibition space, to discuss their ideas and progress.
For the exhibition, each artist is expected to hang their own work in the gallery, and to supply any specialty hanging hardware required. Edition/Basel organizers supply basic tools, magnets, nails, etc. and are present to discuss different hanging options.
Work may continue until the morning of the final day of the program. All artists are expected to participate in the de-installation at the gallery and a general studio clean up.
