Visiting Artist Residency - now accepting applications for 2019

The visiting artist residency program hosts over 30 international artists for 1-3 months each.

Description of residency program
18th Street Arts Center’s visiting artist residency program has hosted more than 500 artists from dozens of countries around the world since it first began in 1992. There are four live/work artist studios at the center where artists are in residence from 1 to 3 months at a time (sometimes longer). This program hosts artists of all disciplines as well as art curators, writers, and musicians. It includes invited artists as well as artists selected through an open application process. The program is open to artists of all generations, nationalities, and disciplines.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Although we primarily support visual artists, 18th Street Arts Center will consider applications from performing artists, writers, and filmmakers as well.

Visiting artists are housed in one of our private live-work studio apartments with fully equipped kitchen, bath, and private living and working quarters. Bicycles are provided for local transportation. Laundry facilities on site.

Studio/ workspace
Studios are spacious and equipped with tables, track lighting, and running water. Basic hand tools and audio/visual equipment are provided on request.

Fees and support
The studio cost is approximately $80/day. Funding for each residency is on a case-by-case basis. Many international artists have access to funding through their cultural ministries or other programs, and we work with artists to secure funding or encourage them to apply to cover the costs of the residency through various funding programs. In some cases, we have agreements with cultural ministries and other funders to underwrite artist residencies. Artists may also choose to cover the basic costs of the residency themselves.

Expectations towards the artist
Artists are expected to participate in monthly community potluck lunches and invited to present their work at one of these events or in our biannual open studios.
