2018 Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (June) Summer Residency with $2000 Stipend

DESCRIPTION OF RESIDENCY PROGRAM
NPAF is now offering FOUR summer residencies inspired by Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and the paradise island of Hawai'i. In recognition of its outstanding natural values, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park was designated as an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980 and a World Heritage Site in 1987. In 2012, the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park was honored in the America the Beautiful Quarters series.

This NPAF residency includes:

  • $2000 Stipend
  • A large house as accommodation
  • A studio
  • A chance to donate a piece of art, through NPAF to the NPS National Collection
  • Manta Ray Swim Experience

DESCRIPTION OF RESIDENCY LOCATION
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, located on the Big Island in Hawai’i boundaries include two legendary and sacred volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa, as well as rainforests and mysterious and ever-changing active lava flows. This is a unique dramatic environment for all media to flourish and to inspire new breakthroughs in process and result.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
This residence is open to all artists working in any medium. There is no special work space or facility available at the park.

ACCOMMODATION
A spacious three-bedroom home suitable for a couple, a family or even a small Art Collective. The house is less than 30 miles away from the heart of the park and close to our amazing Green and Black Sand Beaches. 

Studio/ workspace
A studio will be provided in or near the park. 

Fees and support
This residency comes with a $2000 stipend/reinbursement

Expectations towards the artist
The Artist(s) are expected to make at least one public presentation, reading or performance while in residency. The presentation should focus on either their past art process or the work they are doing at the park. Artists may also provide a public workshop may be given by the Resident at the Park and / or in Volcano.

The artist must follow all park rules and regulations, and historical and cultural resources. The Artists will receive a briefing about the park, its cultural heritage, and its regulations at the beginning of the residency. A VEHICLE IS REQUIRED.

The artist may be expected to evacuate the park at short notice due to closure, fire or other unexpected events.

Because NPS Rangers and other staff have extremely busy work days, Artists may not burden or beleaguer park staff with unusual requests or extraordinary demands.

$55 application fee for individiuals or $110 for couples or $150 for an art collective
