Funded Parent Artist Residency

Funded artist residency for parent artists during the month of July 2019 in bucolic western Colorado

Description of residency program
Elsewhere Studios is an artist residency program in Paonia CO, hosting artists from around the world to have time and space to focus on their work in a unique and supportive environment. Elsewhere is a choose-your-own-adventure style residency, providing residents with the opportunity to connect with the community... or just time to focus on work.Time spans are individually based - 1 to 6 months, accommodating 4 to 6 artists at a time.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
We welcome visual artists, writers, composer/musicians, performance artists at any stage of their careers as well as scientists, activists, teachers, students, or any kind of creative thinker interested in exploring and expanding their work.
Accommodation, Studio/ workspace, Fees and support
Thanks to the generous support of Sustainable Arts Foundation, Elsewhere Studios is excited to be able to offer specific support to parent artists during the month of July 2019. Accepted artists have the choice to bring their spouse/ partner and children or come on their own, are provided with living and studio space, and are awarded a stipend of up to $1500. The artist has the freedom to use the stipend for childcare, bills, travel / material costs, or for summer camp fees for children (there are several in Paonia.)

Residencies will be short-term between one to two weeks and Elsewhere staff can assist in connecting parent artists to childcare, summer camps, additional housing, etc. Families will be housed in either the Basement Apartment: an independent living / studio space with its own kitchen, bathroom and sauna in the lower level of the main house, or the Suite: the upstairs living / studio space with two bedrooms, its own bathroom and shared kitchen. If parents will be attending with older children, we are happy to have them pursue their own creative pursuits as part of the residency and will include them (if they desire) in critiques, open studios, and other Elsewhere events.

We have a washer and dryer for resident use. Residents are responsible for their own meals. The fully equipped main floor kitchen is shared by Suite, Loft Room, and Gingerbread House residents. Grocery store, banks, library, theater, pubs, post office, etc.  are easy walking distance from Elsewhere. Elsewhere also has bicycles available for residents' use.

The artists also share their work and processes with the community through bimonthly events - "Meet-n-Greets", artist talks, open studios, exhibitions, readings, performances, and presentations. In addition, they often give demonstrations and teach classes or workshops open to local community members. They frequently do interactive projects with community members. The artists living in our community are exposed to new and exciting work and find inspiration from engaging with these visiting artists.
