White Nights Residency

Calling artists in all disciplines for a month of light around the clock.

Description of residency programme
Kristinestad Artists' Residency is a non-profit and artist/volunteer run programme in Kristinestad on the Finnish West coast, offered in cooperation with the local cultural affairs office and Spectra art association. It is open to all creative professionals, but practitioners in visual arts, craft and design are particularly welcome. There will be five international artists in residence at the same time.

We are now inviting artists for a 4-week stay between 3 and 30 June 2019 – a period ideal for experiencing the Nordic white nights with 24 hrs of daylight.

If you are into nature, silence and slow living, this setting is for you. For peace to concentrate on a personal project with few things to distract you, look no further. Available resources and sources of inspiration include local vernacular architecture and traditional crafts. We encourage reflection on issues and practices that are central to the local and Finnish context. Collaborations with the local community are welcome. Exhibitions, shows, workshops etc. are possible. We are planning a joint art event for the last week of June, when exhibition spaces will be available free of charge.

Before and throughout the stay, residency hosts will be available for project research, linguistic assistance, finding materials and tools as well as establishing contacts locally.

Disciplines supported and technical information
Visual art in all its forms, sound art, music, dance, craft, design, architecture, writing. Simple printmaking tools are available. There is free wifi, but why not take time off the net for once?

Accommodation
We offer a variety of simple but comfortable accommodation options - all in old wooden buildings at walking distance from the studios. See our website for details.

Studio/ workspace
Five studio spaces (10-15 m2) are available – equipped with desks or workbenches, shelves and seating. Be prepared to share.

Fees and support
The fee of 600 € covers single-room accommodation, workspace and other facilities as well as project assistance before and during the residency. The residency is non-profit, and fees go towards paying the bills. We can offer no grants, but selected candidates who have paid the registration fee will be issued a letter of support for seeking financing elsewhere.

Expectations towards the artist
We see the residency as a communal experience, and you are expected to share knowledge with other artists and residency hosts. We would also like you to give an informal presentation of your artistic practice. End-of-residency exhibitions or shows are welcome – but not obligatory.

Application information
To apply, please send us an informal letter by email and tell us why you would like to come to Kristinestad and what you would like to do during your residency. One A4 will do fine. Please answer the questions listed on our website and link to relevant work or documentation of it online. We are not really interested in long cv's or cryptic artist's statements. If you must attach files, please limit yourself to two recent and relevant works. Please make sure that your email message is not heavier than 10 MB.

Selection process
We generally favour projects with relevance to the Finnish or local context. Our committee will announce its selection in late December.
