Description of residency program
Brashnar Artist-in-Residence (BAiR) is an artist owned and operated urban artist residency program located in the neighborhood Hrom on the west side of Skopje, Republic of Macedonia. BAiR is a multi-faceted residency program allowing resident artists the freedom to explore the potentials of their practice while experiencing Macedonian culture through group related activities.

BAiR's Art House is located in the western neighborhood Hrom, a quiet residential area near the river Vardar. The Art House consists of 3 separate levels with privacy fence, outdoor community areas and a small herb garden.

The  LIVING  area of the house includes:
6 private bedrooms (residents are provided with a bed, linens, pillows, blankets and towels.). 2 and half bath with washing machines for resident use. 2 fully equipped kitchens stocked with basic staples, seasonal vegetables, fruit and fresh herbs from our gardens. 2 community rooms and 4 balconies.

In the surrounding area there are:

  • 2 running/walking trails within a minute from the house.
  • 4 groceries stores within 5-7 minutes from the house.
  • The Farmers Market is open every day from 7am - 5pm and offers not only organic fresh produce but       also a variety of small shops like health food shops, bakeries, cheese shop, house tools/paint supply       shops, etc., and is only 7-10 minutes walking from the house.
  • Ice cream shops, bars, cafes, pizzeria, traditional style restaurant, pharmacies, bakeries, burger shops,   exchange office, ATM's and more are located within a 10 minute walk from the Art House.  

During their residency, residents live in a communal style environment and are encouraged to embrace the local culture and to engage the surrounding community while living at the Art House. Residents also take part in maintaining Brashnar’s organic gardens at the Volkovo Project Space and learning how to live a sustainable lifestyle.

Expectations towards the artist
The residency program is open to all visual artists and writers that strongly encourage work utilizing innovative and traditional forms of art making along with collaborations, artist-led projects and socially engaged practices. This is a self-directed, process-based residency with no obligation or expectation to complete a body of work, but artists are expected to engage with the community during Open Studio events organized by Brashnar that take place the last week of each month.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Applicants in the following fields are eligible to apply: drawing, painting, printmaking (linocut and wood cut), mixed media, new media digital photography, sculpture/installation, land art, performance/video art, interdisciplinary arts, literature, socially engaged practices and cultural research.

Duration of residency
Brashnar Artist-in-Residence offers work and living space for up to 6 artists/writers for stays of 1 month with 2-3 staff artists living with the residents in the Art House during the residency season.

Studio/ workspace
The  STUDIO  area of the house includes:

  • - 4 private studios (three are 140 square feet (13 square meters) and one is 220 square feet (20 square meters) with 7 foot (2.2meters) high walls.) 
  • - 1 shared studio (420 square feet or 40 square meters with 10-foot or 3 meters high walls)
  • - The studios are outfitted with worktables, chairs, easels, drawing board, storage areas and clamp lights.
  • - Hand tools (Power hand tools are available upon request.)
  • - Work clothes and studio rugs
  • - Re-usable material (variety of paper, used bicycle tubes, glass, wire, cardboard, various old metal objects, thread, yarn, plastic containers etc.)
  • - A bathroom 
  • - Small kitchen with outdoor common area for coffee/tea.
  • An outside area around the house to be used as an open-air studio or as an installation space.

Fees and support
The current fee for attending the residency program is 300 Euro per person per month. ‚Äč

For collaborative groups of 2 persons the fee for attending the residency program is 250 euro per person per month  for a shared bedroom and shared studio space or 300 Euro per person per month for private bedrooms and shared studio space.  

This fee includes:

  • Large Shared studio
  • Shared room in a shared family style living area 
  • Art House/Volkovo Project Space utilities
  • WIFI
  • Access to basic hand tools 
  • Variety of reclaimed materials for projects
  • Transportation to and from the airport or bus terminal
  • Opportunities for community projects and engagement  

Support for resident artists include:

  • A guided tour of the neighborhood and the city center (as a group or individual depending on  the arrival of the residents)
  • Unlimited supply of seasonal fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables from our garden
  • Basic herbs and spices for kitchen
  • A weekly group home-cooked traditional meal prepared by our staff
  • Chance to learn how to live a sustainable lifestyle 
  • Staff Member assistance in projects and finding materials
  • Transportation to and from Volkovo Project Space
  • Transportation to and from airport/bus terminal for arriving and departing residents
  • Organization of Open Studio Events at the end of each month ( invitations, snacks, drinks )
  • Organization and transportation for group trips: (Possible destinations include Canyon    Matka; Zebjarnik Monument; Kokino Observatory, Krushevo, Ohrid Lake etc.)
