Burgundy, France: Art / Design / Music Lab & Residency

Burgundy, France: Art / Design / Music Lab & Residency.

Program Overview
Spend two magical weeks on a French Chateau, surrounded by 17th-century interiors, historic gardens and natural landscapes in the Burgundy region of France. Make and exhibit work on the grounds and interiors of the chateau. Connect to the land of France, spending most of the day working and relaxing. Savor authentic French culture, cuisine, and history.  Visit Paris, Dijon, and Reims, France with group day trips, observing contemporary and historic French art and design.

Using the chateau as exhibition space, site-specific course space, and an innovation platform, we aim to make a variety of work, sharing and exchanging perspectives, informed by the past and present. Cross-course critique and dialogue between students and professionals is an essential component of our horizontal platform. Risk taking and hard work are encouraged and nurtured. The French Beaux Arts tradition had students learn painting, drawing, sculpture, and engraving, in addition to architecture. An understanding of classical and contemporary arts was essential to learning. We study the art, food, architecture, design, and culture of France with a holistic experience for all participants.

Burgundy is a historic region west of Paris known for grand chateaus, gorgeous countryside, and gastronomic excellence. The region is famous for Burgundy wines and Dijon mustard, named after the region’s capital city. The Palace of the Dukes in Dijon is where one chapter of the illustrious Musee des Beaux-Arts was established in 1787. Our chateau is located in central Burgundy on a 100+ acre estate. Recently renovated, the chateau has antique suites, a modern kitchen and lovely historic spaces you can explore. Atop the Yonne Valley, observe magnificent views of seven villages dotted along the countryside.

France is relaxing and refined. Our programs integrate living well into daily life, enjoying the sensual qualities of each day. We value focused time to create and reflect, balanced with elegant meals, paired with creative conversation.
