ATTENTION Free accommodation to LGBTQ+ Artists of all media. Art & Consciousness- Creative investigation of pressures upon urban & rural, sexually beyond (gay) people by western queer ‘norms’ in Latin America—utilizing the arts to transmute internalized homophobic rage and examine affects from colonialized-type gay propaganda// Free Accommodation offered to artist in Costa Rica, 2019/2020

We will offer *free housing to an artist(s) who investigate with their chosen creative medium on how the influence of western ideology of ‘Gayness’ or ‘Queerness’ has assimilated harmful colonializing practices.   Grindr, Facebook, Snapchat, Circuit parties, RuPaulian drag, recreational chemical drugs, and demand for sex-workers—How have these matters imposed Western Queer concepts onto Latin America’s own gender evolution? Where has western perception influenced and biased a magical population with ageism, racism and social media tomfoolery, leading to drug addiction, violence, and closeted relationships? While Latin America continues to open their legislation and religious behaviors to expansive, empathic sexuality identifications, there is also a sinister side that traveling queers are leaving behind with their demand for commercialized gay tourism and detrimental fallout from capitalism, and confrontational psychological viewpoints for an awakening, extremely sensitive gender beyond/fluid population.

Residency program
Our Center is wildly unique; it combines ecology, community, mutual cooperation and the arts at a fantastic location within remarkable facilities. We aim to change the relationship of the arts (moving beyond art as strictly commodity or objectification) towards a way to balance the dire situation on the planet, by providing promising interaction between communities and artists that benefit and heal the natural ecosphere.

Accommodations/workshop/studio space
We provide rustic, comfortable, imaginative habitats for artists to create and imagine easily with the muse. Lodging is located in a hilly environment with access to group kitchen. We have 5-shared bathrooms. From private/shared cabins to lofts, or dorm rooms, we have a place that is right for all types of artists. Housing is shared only on agreement and is private unless otherwise stated.

The cabins are suitable for live/work space, and we have separate workshops available for construction/clay/wood working, etc. Dance, theatre can be held in the common building, our dance tower, outdoor amphitheater, or our elevated tree platform. Film/Photography is possible anywhere. Writing can be facilitated in a number of spaces that include our screened in Kiosk (also for photography).

Fees and Support
Awarded artist will receive a cabin free-of-charge for the duration of the agreed stay from 2 weeks to 3 months (up to $3000 value). Artists will be responsible for travel and food.

***note: Artists may also work on personal, individual projects during their stay as long as aspects of the proposal are incorporated or completed.

Expectation\Invitation
We invite an artist to utilize and expand the use of the arts in order to address difficult topics considering gay people in Latin America. Queer community is thriving, yet western perception brings with it unfavorable consequences of ageism, racism, mass consumption, irresponsible sex/drug culture (meth/ketamine/etc.) and social media distractions.

Jaguar Luna Cultural Arts Collective’s programs are devoted to social/ consciousness and environmental positive transformation through the arts. We look forward to welcoming an artist(s) to investigate if or how deeply embedded, entitlement or colonialized behaviors are influencing how queers are ‘seeing’ themselves and participating in the momentous sexual awakening within Latin America, and specifically in Costa Rica.

While on the surface, the queer Rivieras of the Vallartas, (*MEX), the queer/gay populace have a responsibility when they travel. They bring their desires, and demands to locals who may have very different ideas or views of the world or about how to live and be gay.  What images do queers bring from western cultural to Latin America and vs/vs? How can the arts inform both western travelers and queer\gay Latinx society to express themselves beyond the bias of ‘normalized’ queer culture within the framework of hyper-technical and industrialized nations? Whatever the case, the arts can be used to open the discussion of the long, ancient history of queer expression in indigenous cultures in the Americas. We also welcome exploration of ancient homoerotic arts in Latin America and how to creatively reclaim this memory for queers of the region.

Costa Rica is set to open the country to gay marriage in 2020. Its supreme court notoriously and bravely dismissed same-sex marriage ban as discriminatory and unconstitutional in 2018. The recent elections of 2018 were dramatically influenced by the subject of same-sex unions… to the point of calling for 2 balloting cycles. While this is good news, it also carries with it great responsibility from western influencers to open the discussion that maybe ‘our way to be gay’ is not ‘their way to be gay’. If this vital sector of society is a universal influencer in worldwide politics and social change, how can the arts lift up this amazing gender revolution in the Latin Americas?

Whether writing, painting, sculpting, dance/performance, film or other, we are ready for dynamic artists to assist world society and explore this subject matter. How can liberating queers in Latin America help heal toxic masculinity? Can queers/gay society help raise consciousness and expand a healing watershed movement with regards to attention to the environmental crisis and solutions?

Application
We welcome all types of writing ideas. We understand that the work may be flushed out or even changed while at the Center. Therefore, we seek to hear your inspiration on why this project appeals to your compassion.
