Pillars of Facade

Residency for sculptors who work in wood.

Description of residency
Recently US artist Kelsey Harrison created a series of sculptures which were named 'Pillars of Facade' in response to our original call for sculptors. The Pfaelzer Hof is again inviting applications from artists who sculpt and construct in wood. We are now looking for a different interpretation of the same topic.

During the renovation of the Pfaelzer Hof in 2010 it was discovered that the building’s facade was in danger. This historically significant, popular former hotel was rescued from demolition by propping it up with wooden tree trunks and underpinning it with steel girders. Locally sourced spruce wood was used to prop up the facade whilst essential work took place to stabilise the Pfaelzer Hof. These timbers have been retained, seasoned for nine years and we have been making this wood available to be transformed into contemporary sculptures.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
We are seeking sculptors who work in wood. Artists staying with us should be equipped with their own tools. We have a large, ground floor studio space for working in. We offer mentorship and curatorial guidance as well as practical sculptor's support.

Residents stay in one of our three spacious and beautiful apartments. Each apartment is well appointed and has its own bathroom and fully equipped kitchen. There is WiFi throughout the house. Depending on who is staying, there are shared dinners to enable discussion, exchange and potentially forge collaboration.

We have a high visibility studio and project room / public gallery that can be used for sculpting and other types of making / installing. Depending on the number of residents, artists may share studio space. We liaise with residents and always ensure there is plenty of  physical space for artistic engagement.

Fees and support
€1,850 residency fee for up to six weeks. This includes accommodation, studio / project room, gallery exhibition space, ten day exhibition, regional press and publicity, and one-to-one contact with mentor / curator to help you make the most of your stay.

Expectations towards the artist
