FREE work exchange for artists, writers and students

One week practical work; one week self-directed creative practice.

The Pfaelzer Hof in Germany is offering a free two-week work exchange residency for artists, writers and students. During the first week residents will be expected to carry out 30 hours of practical work, including decorating, gardening, renovation, housekeeping, moving items, unpacking boxes, etc. In the second week of the residency, participants are free to engage in self-directed creative activities and make use of the shared project space/studio.

Examples of practical work to be carried out includes:

  • Building with cement and bricks two small walls either side of boiler and fitting marble slab on top.
  • Packing styropor into bags, carrying it downstairs and using it to insulate cellar void.
  • Helping to move furniture and storing boxes.
  • Helping to set up library and unpacking boxes of books.
  • Washing down and painting entrance porch.
  • Lightly sanding and re-varnishing/oiling wooden stairs in main house.
  • Regrouting terrace floor tiles and tiling brick surround.
  • Priming and painting metal elements in cellar with anti-rust paint.
  • Touching up paint work in small areas in Artists' shared flat before leaving.

Duration of residency
Two weeks.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
We are interested to hear from art students and artists from all disciplines as well as writers to come into a peaceful, spacious and light environment to develop their practices within an urban context yet closely surrounded by nature and woodland.

Residents stay in one of our three spacious and beautiful apartments. Each apartment is well appointed and has its own bathroom and fully equipped kitchen. There is WiFi throughout the house. Depending on who is staying there are shared dinners to enable discussion, exchange and potentially forge collaboration.

We have a studio dedicated to painting and a project room / public gallery that can be used for painting, sculpting and other types of making / installing. Artists may share studio space.

Fees and support
This is a free residency opportunity in exchange for 30 hours of practical work in week one. Includes accommodation, access to shared studio / project room and contact with mentor / curator to help you make the most of your stay.

Expectations towards the artist
We expect artists to make good use of their special time with us but we do not expect "results". More important is a willingness to reflect on experiences of being here and the creative process, and we enjoy supporting you in this journey.

We do like artists to have an interview with the local press about their stay. Workshops, talks and exhibitions can be arranged and ideas and proposals are welcome.
