KHN 2020 Session 1 Residencies

KHN awards 2-8 week residencies with $100 weekly stipend, private bedroom, bathroom, and studio.

Description of residency program
KHN awards up to 35 residencies per session (2 sessions per year), housing 5 residents at a time, to established and emerging visual artists, writers, composers/musicians, and interdisciplinary artists from across the country and around the world.

Duration of residency
Residencies are available for 2 to 8 weeks stays.

Application information
KHN hosts two application deadlines per year: September 1 for awards scheduled from July-December of the current year and March 1 for residencies scheduled from January-June of the following year. All applications must be submitted online via KHN's Slideroom portal. All applications are reviewed by a panel of professional peers and awardees are announced within 2 months of the application deadline.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
KHN residencies support established and emerging visual artists, writers/poets, composers/musicians, and interdisciplinary artists from around the world. All residents are provided with 24-hour access to private studio space. Visual Arts studios are located just a few steps away through a private courtyard. They are temperature controlled; include florescent and full spectrum lighting and wi-fi access. Writers’ studios are located within each of the double occupancy apartments and the composers’ studio located on the main floor of the facility, it is spacious, comfortable and quiet (but not soundproof) and includes it’s own a semi-private courtyard. 

Accommodation
KHN is housed in a unique 1969 Prairie-style residential complex that accommodates up to 5 resident artists at any time—generally 2 writers, 2 visual artists, and 1 composer/musician. Two large double-occupancy apartments feature private bedrooms with en suite baths, and spacious shared kitchen, living, and dining rooms. Composers stay in the garden-level efficiency apartment, located under the composition studio. All apartments are furnished with basic necessities such as dishes, pots and pans, appliances, and a basic spice pantry. Bedroom and bath linens are provided. Each apartment has private control for heating or air conditioning. Onsite laundry facilities are available for residents. Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the living and studio spaces. An all-in-one printer is connected to a communal computer and smart TV are available in the residents’ lounge.

Each resident prepares his or her own meals. Grocery items are available within walking distance. Several welcoming restaurants are nearby. KHN maintains two bicycles for residents' use. For those bringing cars, off-street parking is provided.

Studio/Workspace
Visual artists work in one of three studios, two of which are approximately 425 square feet and one that is 258 square feet, outfitted with worktables, running water, and internet. Basic hand tools and power tools, a bandsaw and miter saw, and painting easels are available. The studios feature full-spectrum LED track lighting with moveable fixtures, as well as overhead daylight fluorescent fixtures. The two larger studios have garage doors, which may be opened to face the alley. For printmakers, KHN offers a letterpress studio with a Vandercook Sp15 press and a standard proof press. The studio includes a variety of furniture and fonts, as well as a boxcar base for resident use.

Composers are provided a studio equipped with a Yamaha upright piano, wireless internet, surge protector, two Dynaudio Acoustics BM5A monitors, Sony Monitor headphones, a Mackie 4-channel compact mixer, HP VH240a 23.8” monitor, and cables to connect them. A private writer’s studio is located within each of the double-occupancy apartments featuring computer desks, wireless internet, and surge protector. A shared printer is available in the residents' lounge.

Fees and support
All applicants must pay an application fee of $35. KHN provides all residents with a weekly $100 stipend for the duration of their residency, paid weekly. Housing and studio space is provided. Awardees are responsible for all transportation costs, with the exception of taxi service to/from Omaha or Lincoln on the day of arrival/departure. Details communicated at time of award, some restrictions may apply.

Expectations towards the artist
Applications must be submitted in English. KHN regularly coordinates meet-and-greet lunches, monthly public artist talks, and encourages informal sharings among resident cohorts. All events and gatherings are encouraged but not mandatory. For those interested in additional professional development opportunities, KHN staff will assist on a case by case basis, as able.
