Bundanon Trust

An artistsĀ“ retreat in the Australian bush.

The Bundanon Trust Artist-in-Residence program is open to arts professionals from anywhere in the world and is open to all disciplines. This includes visual artists, writers, performers, producers, directors, composers, new media artists, curators and art theorists. Residencies can be for research and development, for the creation of new work and for collaborations.

Bundanon Trust is the result of the gift by artist Arthur Boyd to the Australian people of 1,100 hectares of bush and park land overlooking the Shoalhaven River on the New South Wales south coast, about three hours’ drive south of Sydney.

  • separate studios for each artist-in-residence
  • private apartments and bathroom facilities for each artist (some with shared kitchens)
  • a music room with a Yamaha baby grand piano
  • a stand-alone building specifically designed as a rehearsal space for dance and performance work - 6.3m x 11.6m with a fully sprung floor and 8m high ceiling
  • a fully-equipped silversmithing studio
  • a printing press.

There is an accommodation fee for Bundanon residencies of $AUD 50 per person per night, with a minimum stay of seven nights. Groups over ten people are accommodated at the Boyd Education Centre at Riversdale at the cost of $AUD 65 per person per night.

Bundanon does not offer stipends, living allowances or travel assistance. Catering is also residents' responsibility. We can recommend arrangements for group catering on request.

Residencies can be from seven days to six weeks. We can accommodate up to ten artists, but the average number of artists on site is around six.

Bundanon is 25 kilometres from the nearest town and railway station. If artists do not have their own car, we can organise transfers to and from the station as well as a weekly shopping trip.

Artists are contacted well in advance of their arrival to ensure their expectations match what we can offer. They are met individually by our staff and are regularly contacted throughout their stay to ensure all is well.

Bundanon offers time, space and peace. Our AIR program is in a remote location – there are no shops or cafes within 20 kilometres. It is for artists who want the time, space and peace to focus on their work. Residents are left to get on with their project. They are not obliged to predetermine the outcome of their time with us. They are however encouraged to participate in our education program by opening their studios to a local school group once during their residency. This is not obligatory.
