2019/2020 International residencies in the countryside at CRETA Rome

The best of both worlds! The tranquility of the countryside and RomeĀ“s centre just an hour away!

The non-profit organization ‘c.r.e.t.a. rome’ offers an international self-funded residency program in the countryside of Rome, Italy. The Italian word for clay seemed perfect to express our commitment to creating an international reference point for ceramics and the arts in the eternal city of Rome. Moreover, taken as an acronym, it spells out our main activities: ceramics, residencies, exhibitions, teaching and the arts. Artists have the opportunity to focus on their art, whether it be creating a new body of work, expanding a well-established oeuvre or allowing themselves to draw inspiration from their surroundings and the centuries of culture that define the eternal city. In addition, they will have access to the wealth of galleries and exhibitions in Rome and beyond.

c.r.e.t.a. rome's residency in the countryside is still in Rome, but lies on the border with the nearest town, Anguillara Sabazia, one of three Medieval towns on the lake of Bracciano. This option is particularly attractive for collaborative projects and/or ceramic artists who work with reduction firing as well as non-ceramic artists who prefer a private studio. Spouses/companions and/or children are also welcome (supplemental fee). Accommodation is in a 1-bedroom house with a garden and a private studio.

We offer artist residencies for ceramic artists, visual artists and writers for periods of 4 or 5 weeks. The residency periods can be combined, but the residency cannot exceed 90 days (for non-EU citizens).

All visual artists and writers are encouraged to apply. The studio is equipped in particular for ceramic artists, but we have hosted fiber artists, graphic artists, painters as well as writers and photographers. We find that the range of disciplines adds a richness to the experience. We provide some technical support, help in procuring materials for your work, firings, etc., advice on museums, galleries and sites in Rome and beyond. We also provide a weekly run to the supermarket and the city center to pick up food and other necessities. Work materials can be delivered to you at the house.

Housing is in a one-bedroom house in the countryside less than 40 kilometers from the historic center of Rome. The lake of Bracciano is 10 minutes away by car. The nearest train station is 2,5km. away. We have two bikes available for resident's use. From the train station there are regular trains that run to Rome in about 40 mins. There is also a shuttle bus from the train station to the town of Anguillara on the lake, stopping along the way at supermarkets, etc.

The house can accommodate two to four people. In addition to the bedroom, there is a sofa bed in the living room. The kitchen is fully equipped plus there is a dishwasher, washing machine and air conditioning. Linens and towels are provided. The house is surrounded by a garden complete with fruit trees.

This is a particularly good option for artists working on collaborative projects or who seek tranquility for writing. Other visual artists may appreciate access to a private studio. Resident artists can bring their spouses/companions and/or families (supplemental fee).

Residents have a well-equipped private studio, that is separate but easily accessible from the living area. Each artist is provided with wall space, a table and shelving units. For ceramic artists, there is a wheel, kilns and a range of ceramic tools as well as access to clay, glazes and raw materials. In addition to electric kilns, there are gas kilns with options for reduction firing. The studio is also equipped with an extensive art and art history library.

The cost of a 5-week residency in the historic center of Rome is €3000; for a month-long residency, the cost is €2500.  For collaborative projects, two artists can share the housing and studio space in the Roman countryside. In that case, each artist will pay a reduced fee of €2000 for a 5-week residency, €1850 for a month-long residency. Materials and fring costs are not included. We do not currently have fellowships, but if accepted, we can provide documentation for applying for outside funding.

Artists are encouraged to submit a proposal for inclusion in a final group exhibition in the c.r.e.t.a. rome studio in the historical center of Rome to display the work created during the residency period (optional). For visual artists, the donation of one piece is requested (optional).
