Red Gate Residency Seeks Residency Director

Founded in 2001, the Red Gate Residency is an international artists’ residency program in Beijing providing artists, curators, writers and academics with the opportunity to live and create work in China. The program is the cornerstone of Red Gate Gallery’s international cultural exchange initiative.

A Residency Director is sought to start work mid-December 2016.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Residency Director manages and oversees all residency programming and outreach functions and acts as the on-site contact for all potential applicants, accepted artists, and current artists-in-residence. This is a full-time position for a ‘people-person’, requiring excellent organizational skills and initiative to manage 9 - 11 visiting artists at any one time living in our nine spaces (three downtown apartments and six studios/lofts). This is not a 9 – 5 job but one requiring flexible hours to cope with departures and arrivals, weekend and evening activities, unexpected requirements, etc.

This job offers a fantastic learning experience reinforcing current skills and developing potential.

Main objectives:

  • To manage all operations related to running an international not-for-profit artists-in-residency program
  • Act as primary point of contact for accepted residents
  • To further develop program partnerships for incoming artists
  • To develop program partnerships for out-going artists;
  • To research and develop funding opportunities to support all programs.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as primary point of contact for accepted residents
  • Organize residency programming (artist talks, gallery tours, Open Studios)
  • Manage relations with current organizational partners and exchange residency programs
  • Oversee arrivals/departures/changeovers for all new residents on a monthly basis
  • Review applications with Brian Wallace on a monthly basis
  • Orientation for all new residents with residency coordinator
  • Basic networking for residents with local contacts who may be of interest or helpful to them
  • Embassy relations: notify local embassies about residents from their country
  • Work with founder and accounting manager to maintain residency budget of approximately US$130,000 with timely monthly reporting
  • Update orientation materials (program information, pre-arrival information, additional resources, accommodation information) as needed
  • Update the bi-lingual content on the gallery’s website
  • Manage support staff (residency coordinator, interns), facility manager, cleaning staff
  • Oversee maintenance of all facilities
  • Maintain relations with residents after they go to maintain strong alumni network
  • Keep residency network profiles up to date (Resartis, Residency Unlimited, Alliance of Artist Communities, China Residencies)
  • Regular reporting to the Founder/Gallery Director

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A passion for art and being with and engaging artists
  • Excellent written, spoken English and professional email correspondence
  • Practical spoken Chinese language skills
  • Engaging interpersonal skills
  • Experience in events management or arts administration
  • Strong time management skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational ability
  • Work and/or living experience in Beijing/China
