Rural Encounters A.I.R. Program

Makerspace, hackerspace, fablab, living lab...We prefer to call Buinho a creative playground!

Description of residency program
The Residency program at Buinho encourages dialogue, exchange and experimentation. The program is non-prescriptive and process-based, allowing visiting artists to develop projects in response to their new environment, or to conduct research benefiting from our Fablab´s resources.

The Residencies Program has some unique features, promoting diverse cultures and practices through international and experimental projects, together with a more digital production approach.

Duration of residency
Buinho develops several International Residency Programs that give non-resident artists in Portugal the opportunity to live and work in Messejana for a period between two weeks and three months (longer periods can be arranged.)

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
The program aims to facilitate the international exchange and the exchange of ideas through artistic practice in the areas of visual arts, performance, photography and video.
These international residencies encourage dialogue, exchange and experimentation.

The artist will stay in a private room inside Buinho, which is a live-work shared space. Buinho has 2 single rooms and one double room. The bathroom is shared.

Studio/ workspace
The studio/workspace is shared. Buinho house is constituted in 3 sections: the first section at the entrance is a studio for graphics and painting with easels, the second section is the social area and the accommodation and the third section is the workshop. The small patio outdoors can also be used to work.

Fees and support
The artistic residency program fees (please see the pdf attached to this call or in the Buinho website) are for maintenance and cleaning of the space purposes. We provide curatorial and production support as well as support in funding applications.

Expectations towards the artist
Although is not obligatory, we expect the artist to be involved at some point of his/her work with the local community, either through a presentation, exhibition or workshop. These activities can be arranged case by case with the curator and the production assistant of Buinho.
