Deadline: Open call

The Ou Gallery - Canada - Open Call

Open call for international artists - experience the art life on Vancouver Island, Canada.

The Ou was an old boatbuilding workshop and you can feel the history in the old fir floors and layers of resin. We aim to be 'more than just wall space' and our monthly exhibitions are curated to reflect a contemporary & emerging art space unique to the Cowichan Valley.

Our residency is open year round with comfortable living quarters situated on the picturesque Bing’s Creek with access to a calm garden space under a bright green canopy of towering maple trees.

The studio space provided is in an historic boatbuilding factory from the 1920’s with 24-hour access. We would support you in creating & leading a workshop for the community, and presenting an exhibition of your work during the residency or in conclusion of your stay, though this is completely optional.

Where are we?
We are located in the small city of Duncan in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. This lush microclimate, called Qu'wutsun, (warm land) by the native Coast Salish Peoples is hot and dry in the summers and mild and moist in the winters and is part of “Canada's only maritime Mediterranean climate.”

The Valley has a rich First Nations history and the Salish culture is very prominent today. Just a short walk away, the town centre is spotted with totem poles from different nations, some represent a historical style while others are more contemporary, with totems from other cultures worldwide. Cultural events are often held at the Qu’wutsun Conference Center, on the south end of downtown.

We are surrounded by rural life, with an abundance of beautiful vineyards, wineries and agricultural farmland just minutes out of town. The Trans Canada Trail goes through the Valley as well and there are numerous options for hiking & nature enthusiasts. We are centrally located between Victoria and Nanaimo, as well as having access to numerous ferries connecting to smaller islands in the Salish Sea, a popular destination for sailing and fishing.

Duration of residency
Artists have the option to stay weekly or monthly up to 3 months unless otherwise agreed upon.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
The Ou Residency welcomes visual artists, printers, writers, poets, performers - independent makers who need time away to focus on a series, or active collaborators who would like to teach workshops, host an event or setup an installation or exhibition of their work. Share your ideas & we'll try to help them come to life!

Your suite is below the Hall & has a view onto Bings Creek. The suite includes a large living room with lots of natural light, a renovated kitchen with a gas stove & dishwasher, a 3-piece bathroom (includes a tub) with heated floor and shared laundry.

Studio/ workspace
The studio is situated within “The Hall” of the old boatbuilding workshop, which is 1000 sq feet. The Hall is open and rustic with 70 year old fir floors. The artist in residence’s studio space is approximately 100 sq feet and will be reserved strictly for the artist, their supplies and projects. Depending on your focus, the studio space available can be adjusted for large scale works, installations, performance & music.
