General information

Brief description of organisation

THE INSTITUTO SACATAR, a non-profit corporation founded in 2000, runs an artist residency program on the island of Itaparica across the bay from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Sacatar occupies a sea-side estate, formerly the retreat of a Catholic girls´ school. The artists have their own bedroom/bathroom suites in a large house with a central courtyard and wide verandahs facing the bay. To the east of the residency house, five studios, surrounding a coconut grove, serve the visual arts, dance/theater, music and creative writing. There are an additional two studios in the main house. Simple hand tools are available in a shared wood shop. The beach is secluded, with calm waters. It is a short walk to the historic village of Itaparica and an hour boat ride to Salvador, the first capital of Brazil.

Brief description of residency program

THE PROGRAM provides each selected artist a private room with attached bath, a separate studio, laundry and meal service for eight week residency sessions at its beachside estate on the island of Itaparica, which is situated across the bay from the city of Salvador. Artists can work on their own, but Sacatar also provides support for artists to work with local and regional groups or organizations on specific projects.

Sacatar strives for a mix of Brazilian and international artists at all times. Creative individuals in all fields may apply. Selection is based on talent, professional experience and the individual´s proposal.

Sacatar pick up artists at the airport on the first day of the residency and take them back to the airport on the last day of the residency. Artists are provided full board except Saturday evenings, Sundays and Brazilian holidays. Artists are responsible for their own airfare and visa requirements.
