Hafnarborg AIR: Open Call for 2019

Seeking applicants for next year‘s program at The Hafnarfjörður Centre of Culture and Fine Arts.

Description of Program
Hafnarborg – the Hafnarfjörður Centre of Culture and Fine Arts operates an Artist in Residence program on the top floor of the museum building at Strandgata 34 in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland. Welcoming artists of all disciplines, the program is mainly intended for foreign artists. The application form can be found below or at our website.

Duration of Residency
The apartment is allocated for a month at a time, beginning with the first date of each month and ending with the last. However, there is no requirement that the artist stay for the entire duration of the residency.

Disciplines, Work Equipment and Assistance
Hafnarborg encourages visual artists of different disciplines to apply for the residence; the museum being in large part devoted to modern art, as well as preserving the local town‘s art collection. The studio is a modest work space, without technical equipment, as the artists are expected to provide the tools and material for their own creative work. The museum staff may offer assistance or advice on various matters, always welcoming questions from residents.

Accomodation, Studio and Workspace
The premises are 80 sq. m., being divided into a kitchen, dining room, bathroom, studio space and a large bedroom with a double bed. The apartment is fully equipped with utensils and appliances; linen, towels, washing machine, dryer, telephone and internet connection. The apartment is located in the heart of Hafnarfjörður, close to the main bus stop in town, with frequent trips to downtown Reykjavík, making commuting very easy.

Residency Fee
The residency fee is 500 euros; payment being due at least three months prior to arrival. This fee includes electricity, heating, local telephone calls and internet connection.

Expectations Towards the Artist
Hafnarborg is dedicated to providing artists with the opportunity of visiting Iceland in search of inspiration, whether it be found in the unique landscape and nature of the island or the small local communities. Expectations are otherwise minimal. Still, there is always a possibility of hosting an open studio or artist talk, by mutual agreement of the artist and Hafnarborg, but this is not required.
