Description of residency program
Germinate is a research residency for artists interested in plant life. The weeklong residency will facilitate 12-15 workshops and excursions into natural habitats, laboratories and greenhouses enriched by biologists, naturalists and specialists to learn and collect materials.

Outline of activities

  • We invite you to give a private artist talk to share your work with the group.
  • Guided tour of the Arboretum and experimental farm.
  • Meet with the Ottawa Society of Botanical Illustration.
  • Visit the National Herbarium archives.
  • Hike the woods with an expert on invasive species.
  • Visit the laboratory of an ethnobotanist.
  • Meet a kirilian photographer for an artist talk on life left in a plant and plant EEG demonstration.
  • Hike the Wild Garden to pick edible and medicinal plants.
  • Visit the research green houses at Ottawa University.
  • Learn about trees.
  • Visit a biodynamic vinyard.
  • Study diatoms under the microscope.
  • Visit the Ottawa Seed Library to learn about seed saving and sustainable food.
  • Guided tour of the Fletcher Wildlife Garden to talk about species native to Canada's capital.
  • Attend a talk on poisonouse garden plants from a representitive from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Duration of residency
The residency will take place over a week in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada in the summer of 2019.

Disciplines supported and technical information
All disciplines are supported. No science experience necessary.

Residents will be picked up in Ottawa and driven to the Ayatana Residency House, where they will have a bed and bedding and will be driven to all activities. Meals will be provided.

Indoor and outdoor workspace is available

Residency fee is $1250 USD

Expectations towards the artist
Residents are not expected to produce work during the program. Residents are invited to give a 20 minute artist talk to the group.
