Artspace Visual Arts Centre
General information
Brief description of organisation
Artspace Visual Arts Centre is a leading international residency-based contemporary art centre, housed in the historic Gunnery Building in Woolloomooloo fronting Sydney Harbour. Committed to the development of new ideas and practices in contemporary art and culture, since the early 1980s Artspace has been building a critical context for Australian and international artists, curators and writers.
Prioritising the ideas and practices of artists, Artspace fosters the development of challenging new installation-based work, including projects in video, performance, sound, interactive and other forms of developing technologies. Through public program, education and publication activities Artspace explores critical contexts for contemporary art and encourages examination of the diverse social, political and visual processes that shape Australian culture within both regional and global frameworks.
Each year Artspace presents around 20 gallery projects; hosts over 50 artist residencies; initiates a range of public program and education activities; and publishes \'Column\', a regular Artspace periodical as well as cultural theory books and artist monographs.

Brief description of residency program
Artspace supports artists’ research and practice through a comprehensive Studio Residency Program. Hosting visitors from around Australia and the world, Artspace is a key hub for the contemporary art community in Sydney and across New South Wales, fostering dialogue between local artists, writers and curators and their national and overseas counterparts.
Artspace operates four residential and seven non-residential studios on-site in the Gunnery Building, Woolloomooloo. The Residency Program provides local, national and international artists with the space and time to develop new ideas and work, as well as enabling the construction of major site-specific works for the Artspace Gallery Program.
Artspace Studio Residencies are available via an application process to artists and other related professionals not directly involved in the Artspace Gallery Projects Program. On average two residential and four non-residential studios are allocated across the year in this manner.
