Brief description of organisation

deFENIKS is a haven for the development, research, experiment, creation and presentation of adventurous multidisciplinary musical theatre, where artistic dialogue and cross-fertilization are stimulated and new joint ventures sounded out. Boundaries are sought out, explored and shifted, artistic projects are given the chance to mature and artistic talent is able to blossom.

Brief description of residency program

deFENIKS is a haven for independent musical-theatre makers from Belgium and abroad. To all singers, musicians, composers, actors, artists and so on who engage in experimental work in the musical-theatre genre (in all its forms and guises), the WALPURGIS musical-theatre company offers a 2 to 3-week residence at deFENIKS between May and September, plus the opportunity to present their research/work/project during the FENIKS FESTIVAL.

In consultation and subject to availability, a residence in deFENIKS MAY include: - workspace in deFENIKS - a presentation of max. 45 min during the FENIKS FESTIVAL - technical and logistical support - accommodation - professional support and advice (artistic, business, production, communication) - assistance with local networking A total production budget of 3.000 euros is provided. Travel and transport costs are not covered. We therefore recommend you explore the possibilities getting a travel grant from your local government.

How to reach

By train

It´s best to get off at Antwerp Central Station.
At the premetro station under the railway station, you take tram 15 in the direction of Mortsel.
Get off at stop L. Gevaertsstraat.
Cross the tram verge and the road, and make a right onto the Antwerpsestraat. Take the next street on the left, the Deurnestraat.
About halfway the street, across the municipal academy of fine arts, you make a right onto the Deurneleitje.

Coming from Antwerp

From the Singel around Antwerp you follow the signs in the direction of Mortsel.
At the St Willebrorduskerk you cross the highway and take the Grote Steenweg, which turns into the Antwerpsesteenweg in Mortsel.
Where the double lane road turns into a single lane road you make a left at the traffic lights, into the Hendrik Kuijperstraat.
At the end of this street, you make a right onto the Septestraat.
You pass underneath the Agfa pedestrian bridge.
Then you take the second street on your right (on the roundabout, you choose the street at the far right), the Deurnestraat.
About halfway the street, across the municipal academy of fine arts, you make a right onto the Deurneleitje.

Coming from Brussels on the E19

Take the exit Wilrijk/Hoboken/Mortsel, just before you get to the Craeybeckxtunnel.
Keep right and follow the exit in the direction of Mortsel on the E11
Where the E11 goes down, you go straight on at the traffic lights, onto the Frans Van Dunlaan.
At the first traffic lights you make a left, onto the Jozef Hermanslei.
At the next traffic lights, go straight on, into the Hendrik Kuijperstraat.
At the end of this street, you make a right onto the Septestraat.
You pass underneath the Agfa pedestrian bridge.
Then you take the second street on your right (on the roundabout, you choose the street at the far right), the Deurnestraat.

Coming from Brussels on the A12

You follow the A12 in the direction of Antwerp, but don´t go onto the bridge.
Just past the centre of Wilrijk, you make a right onto the E11, in the direction of Mortsel and the E19.
You drive past the access to the E19, and keep going straight ahead.
Where the E11 goes down, you go straight on at the traffic lights, onto the Frans Van Dunlaan.

You take the E17 in the direction of Antwerp.
After the Kennedytunnel, you take exit 5 in the direction Berchem/Wilrijk.
Make a right, and then again right onto the Singel.

On the ring around Antwerp you take the exit Berchem/Mortsel.
You make a left, crossing the highway.
Bovenaan de afrit ga je links, de autostrade weer over.
You are now on the Grote Steenweg, which turns into the Antwerpsesteenweg in Mortsel.
Where the double lane road turns into a single lane road you make a left at the traffic lights, into the Hendrik Kuijperstraat.
