General information |
Short chronicleOCT Contemporary Art Terminal( OCAT) of He Xiangning Art Museum is founded in 2005. It is unique in being the first contemporary art institution to be established in association with, and administered by, a State-owned art museum in China.
Overseas Chinese Town is the place where OCAT is located. This is a district of the city of Shenzhen, a thriving metropolis in the south of China. Shenzhen is a Special Economic Zone, which means the city enjoys a particular set of privileges and benefits that represent China’s first experiments with market economic development in the 1980s. Within this frenetic modern city, Overseas Chinese Town is a beautiful, well equipped and modern seaside district. The tourism,real estate and electronic industry of Overseas Chinese Town Group is prominent in China.
The mission of OCAT is to integrate domestic and overseas resources of contemporary art to promote Chinese contemporary art to an international standard as well as to hasten a range of cultural exchange programmes. OCAT’s exhibition programs, academic seminars, and International Art Residency program will help lay the foundations for a truly professional organization.
Short description of programmeOCAT International Art Residency is one the important programs of OCT Contemporary Art Terminal (OCAT). In each year, OCAT invites five young and experimental artists, critics and curators from the visual arts area for residency in OCAT’s studios, and provides certain allowance, equipment and PR service to support their art practice and research during their residency. The program aims to create a dynamic platform for multi-disciplinary exchange, synthesize international cultural sources and contribute to the construction and development of Chinese contemporary art system, further to make OCAT an international standard contemporary art organization. Conditions |
Duration of residenciesAugust 15--November 15 of each year. The recipient should arrive in residence on time and also should stay in residence for three months according to our regulation. GrantsCover the round-trip travel (economy fare) expenses between the Recipients’ permanent place of residence and Shenzhen.
Health and life insurance for the recipient during the residency.
The sum of three thousand Yuan (RMB) per month per recipient for the cost of living (meals, traffic, communication and etc.) during the residency., (100 Yuan per day, will provide living cost according to the number of days the Recipients stay)
The sum of one thousand Yuan (RMB) per month per recipient for the cost of materials and researching works during the residency.
PR service.
(For group application, we supply above items according to personal standard)
Expenses paid by artistsCover any cost incurred outside of the commitments made by OCAT and stated above. Recipients can apply for foundation from their own country and OCAT can supply the reference letter. Applications: who/howPlease supply following materials:
1.A completed application form (Please send email to:ocat2005@yahoo.cn to ask for the form).
2.(1) To artists:
One page of latest resume, including your educational background, important personal and group exhibitions, awards and articles or publications about your art work.
(2)To critics or curators:
One page of latest resume, including your educational background,research achievement or curatorial experience and awards.
3. (1)To artists:
The photos or discs of your art work (jpg.). Please clearly indicate the title, media,size and time of them. Also one or two articles or publications about your work.
(2)To critics or curators:
Critics please supply one or two research papers published on normal publications. Curators please supply at least two catalogues or publications of the exhibitions you curated.
4. A proposal concisely describe your application objective and your project.
5. The subject and brief introduction of the speech you will make during your residency.

PS: Uncompleted application will not be dealt with. Please clearly indicate your name on your materials. All the materials sent by applicants are kept in the archives of OCAT and will not be sent back. Selection procedureThe application deadline of 2010 is April30. Applicants are encouraged to send
their completed application package well ahead of time.
All the applicants will be informed by email of the result in May to June 2010. Presentation of artists' workAchieve the project you mentioned in your proposal.
Open your studio from time to time, make lectures, and communicate with the local public, artists and art organizations.
Show your art work or research work achieved during your residency in the form of exhibition, academic lecture or research paper. This maynot as responsibility, but just for the recipients who will to do, and also it should be lied on the coordination with OCAT.
Put in a report to summarize your residency experience.

Number of studios5 Type and size of studiosTypical of OCAT’s residency is an 130 sq.m spaces consisting of a large upstairs bedroom/living area and a downstairs workspace.
Each residency is self-contained with furniture, phone, ADSL Internet connection, hot water, fridge, washing machine, air conditioner and cooking facilities. Weekly cleaning is included.
